About Evan

Evan Carydakis is an acclaimed Jazz saxophonist, residing in Tasmania. Born in Melbourne Victoria, Evan first picked up the saxophone at the age of 15. Initially inspired by Branford Marsalis’s ‘Royal garden Blues’, it was his family’s influence and love of all music that set Evan on his stylistic journey.

‘Majorca’, the final track on my new Groove Ho

‘Majorca’, the final track on my new Groove House EP, started with my brother Stephan’s love of Latin music. Latin sounds and rhythm inspired him to play around with some chord changes on his bass guitar, which over time eventuated into a verse and chorus. He handed that skeleton over to me, I added a melody, and the song was brought to life! Add the amazing talent of Thomas Lorenzo and we were very happy with the outcome. There was no need for me to add my saxophone to something that Thomas had already spoken for so beautifully!⁠

‘Grand Central’, the fourth track on my new Gr

‘Grand Central’, the fourth track on my new Groove House EP, was inspired by one particular visit to New York where my wife and I stayed with a great friend of mine, Dante at his home in White Plains. He is an art dealer, and often travelled by train into the city to close his deals, and on this one occasion, the deal was closed at Grand Central Station. A quick train ride in, close the deal, and out. You can hear the inspiration of the rail transport in the melody!⁠

‘Grand Central’, the fourth track on my new Groove House EP, pays homage to The Oakland Sound, made famous by the band Tower of Power (@towerofpower), and it is written with that style in mind. Tower of Power were part of the labyrinth of great music we grew up listening to which included The Doobie Brothers (@doobiebrothersofficial), Steely Dan, Paul Simon (@paulsimonofficial), Sting (@theofficialsting), Bon Jovi (@bonjovi) and Kiss (@kissonline).⁠

‘Will I See You Again’, the third track on my

‘Will I See You Again’, the third track on my new Groove House EP, is inspired by the memory of my Mother and Father, Maria and Nicholas Carydakis. As time has gone on, I often find myself thinking about the laughs I had with my parents, especially towards the end of their lives. In that memory, there is a longing in the form of a question, “Will I see you again?”⁠

‘Ponderosa’, the second track on my new Groove

‘Ponderosa’, the second track on my new Groove House EP, was inspired stylistically by British guitarist Ronny Jordan who was a major player in the acid jazz movement. His music was also heavily influenced by R & B, Hip Hop and Jazz, and it’s those elements that we infused into this song.⁠
When we asked Michael Oliphant to play keyboards in this song, being the brilliant musician that he is, he also came up with the ostinato string arrangement at the end of the song. The strings seem to come out of nowhere but make a bold final statement that is a testament to Mike’s brilliance.⁠

‘Ponderosa’, the second track on my new Groove

‘Ponderosa’, the second track on my new Groove House EP, is one of those songs that just popped into my brother Stephan’s head one day while he was in his backyard back home in Melbourne. It was not yet a complete song, just the hook and chorus, and I added the verse and bridge then presto!⁠
